What is a DOI?

A digital object identifier (DOI)  are in wide use mainly to identify academic, professional, and government information, such as journal articles, research reports and data sets, and official publications though they also have been used to identify other types of information resources, such as commercial videos.

They are used as a linked "permanent home" for these items in case the original website they are hosted on change. The DOI is most often seen in a citation. For example:

Lahman, M. P. (2018). By my side: The university’s first service dogs. Health Communication, 33(2), 222-224. doi:http://dx.doi.org.ciis.idm.oclc.org/10.1080/10410236.2016.1250185
