Does the Library have reference books?

Answer

Yes! We have many reference books in print and online. Our physical (print) collection is in-library use only, which means you are welcome to use the resources when you visit the library, but they cannot be checked out.

Reference books include resources such as:

  • Dictionaries
  • Encyclopedias
  • Handbooks
  • and more!

Tips for finding reference resources:

  • Think of your topic broadly and think of one keyword to describe it. For example, let's say your topic is on the transmission of transgenerational trauma:
  • Your search could be:
    • keyword: trauma AND
    • title: dictionary OR encyclopedia OR handbook
    • Using this search I had many results, but chose to view the eBook Encyclopedia of trauma : an interdisciplinary guide.
    • Once in the eBook, you can browse through entries alphabetically, or use a keyword to search for the word in the eBook:
      • Image of the Encyclopedia of Trauma illustrating either searching for the keyword transgenerational, or browsing the letter T to get to an entry called Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma.

  • Another tip is to browse our curated subject guides to see if there is a Reference Materials tab with links to reference books available at CIIS relevant to that particular subject:
    • Image of the Psychology Resources guide. There are various tabs in the guide menu. Circled is the Reference Materials tab which shows a page of curated reference books on this topic available at the CIIS Library.
