What are a few ways copyright applies at the CIIS Library?
Answer
For everyone:
When making interlibrary loan requests, or scan requests, we can only offer up to one chapter per book. Also, we cannot share entire eBooks via interlibrary loan due to copyright restrictions.
Copyright restrictions may also apply to how many pages you can save in an eBook that is available at the CIIS Library. These limitations are set by the publisher and vary from book to book. You can find this information on the individual eBook page under Availability. If you do not see anything about availability, you may be able to download the entire book chapter by chapter.
It is important not to share downloaded PDFs of articles and book chapters with others. This would break copyright law by distributing materials illegally. Instead, provide them with a link to the resource in the Library Catalog. As long as they are part of the CIIS community, they will have access.
Please do not scan entire print books.
For faculty:
Copyright may affect the way you share course materials with students. The best practice is to find the link from the CIIS Library Catalog to a book/article and include that in your syllabus.
We do not recommend uploading PDFs of articles into your Canvas course space for a few reasons:
- If the Library has access to this chapter/article, we will only see that it has been downloaded once by you. If the usage statistics are low, we may drop the item from our subscriptions.
- If you are using a sizeable number of chapters and articles that are not available at the CIIS Library, you should consider creating a Course Packet via TextBookX. This service clears copyright for you while compiling a PDF or print booklet that students can purchase. Please contact your Program Manager/Coordinator for more information on how to do this.
- If uploading PDFs, you will need to understand how Fair Use applies. Even if you meet the Fair Use factors, it will likely only apply for one semester in which time you will be expected to come up with an alternative copyright-friendly alternative.
