What is the Remote Access Bookmarklet and how do I use it?

Answer

Most electronic resources can be accessed from the CIIS Library website. However, in cases where you go directly to a publisher's site without having logged in as a CIIS user, you will not be recognized as having access. For these cases, the Browser Bookmarklet below will allow you to log in without first going back to the CIIS Library Catalog.

The Browser Bookmarklet is a plugin that checks if users have full text access to library content by adding a link to the browser's favorites bar that rewrites the current page's URL to allow access, if CIIS subscribes.

How to Install

  1. Drag the Try the CIIS Library bookmarklet button to your browser's toolbar.
  2. OR right mouse click on the bookmarklet button and select "Copy link address".
    • Place your cursor in your browser's toolbar.
    • Right mouse click and select "Paste".

 Try the CIIS Library

MAC USERS:

  • Chrome: It is not possible to install the bookmarklet in Chrome on some Mac operating systems (e.g., Mojave and High Sierra).
  • Safari: It is possible to install the bookmarklet in Safari if your Mac OS is Mojave or High Sierra. Please consider using Safari as your browser.

MICROSOFT USERS:

  • It is not possible to install the bookmarklet in Edge. Please use IE, Chrome, or Firefox.

Common Bookmarklet Errors

The bookmarklet will attempt to rewrite any website URL, whether we license that content or not. If you receive a “Remote Access Error” when you use the bookmarklet on a URL, the most common reasons are:

  1. The content is freely available and hence not proxied for off-campus use. Don’t use the bookmarklet for this content. If you are unsure, check the library website Database List or reach out to help@ciis.libanswers.com noting the title of the resource you need, and a Librarian will let you know if CIIS has access to the content.
  2. The content is not directly provided by CIIS. It could be that we have the title in question, but from a different vendor.
