Why doesn't RefWorks Citation Manager work on the Microsoft Word app installed on my computer?

Answer

Have you tried installing the RefWorks Citation Manager writing tool into your desktop version of Microsoft Word and it doesn't work? You may notice an error message at the bottom right of your Word screen.

This is most often caused by not having an authenticated version of Word. This means that the version of Word you are using is not "paid" for, or may be expired.

Luckily, active CIIS students, faculty, and staff have access to several Microsoft Office products through their CIIS email address (@mymail.ciis.edu or @ciis.edu). Once updated using your @mymail and @ciis email addresses, you should be able to install RefWorks.

Option 1:

Sign in to your CIIS email account in Word.

  1. Open the Word app/software on your computer.
  2. Look for a small Sign in area at the top right of the screen. Click this and sign in using your CIIS email and password.

  • Note: If there is a name/account in this area you may need to click here to choose Sign in with a different account

3. Now, try re-installing RefWorks Citation Manager

Please see the FAQ link below for instructions on how to do so.

Option 2:

You may need to re-install Word. To do so, please follow the instructions provided in the linked FAQ below.
